Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Are Toxic for the Freshwater Mussel Unio ravoisieri: Evidence from a Multimarker Approach

چکیده
The current work investigated the ecotoxicological effects induced by Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs), used at three different concentrations (C1 = 10 ?g·L?1, C2 100 ?g·L?1 and C3 1000 ?g·L?1) in a laboratory experiment, on freshwater mussel Unio ravoisieri. Biochemical analyses of gills digestive glands revealed stress-related disruption antioxidant system. catalase activity rates malonedialdehyde hydrogen peroxide production were significantly higher both organs following exposure to TiO2 NPs was concentration-dependent. In addition, based observed changes acetylcholinesterase activity, it can be concluded that disturbance threshold for cholinergic system less than 1 mg·L?1 TiO2. Overall, results suggest ravoisieri could as sentinel species monitoring surveys assessing environmental impact metallic systems.

The effect of seasonal temperature variation on behaviour and metabolism in the freshwater mussel (Unio tumidus).
Temperature plays a critical role in determining the biology of ectotherms. Many animals have evolved mechanisms that allow them to compensate biological rates, i.e. adjust biological rates to overcome thermodynamic effects. For low energy-organisms, such as bivalves, the costs of thermal compensation may be greater than the benefits, and thus prohibitive. To examine this, two experiments were ...
متن کاملBiological activity of pentachlorophenol on the digestive gland cells of the freshwater mussel Unio tumidus.
Many chlorinated phenols and their derivatives are used extensively as insecticides, fungicides and herbicides by industrial and agricultural users throughout the world. Among these substances, pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a broad-spectrum biocide, which is still used as a wood preservative. In this paper, the digestive gland cells were used to assess the effect of PCP in the range of concentrati...
متن کاملOral toxic exposure of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on serum biochemical changes in adult male Wistar rats
Objective(s): Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in commercial food additives and cosmetics worldwide. Uptake of these nanoparticulate into humans by different routes and may exhibit potential side effects, lags behind the rapid development of nanotechnology. Thus, the present study designed to evaluate the toxic effect of mixed rutile and anatase TiO2 NPs on serum bioc...
متن کاملHost specificity and metamorphosis of the glochidium of the freshwater mussel Unio tumidiformis (Bivalvia: Unionidae).
The glochidium larvae of freshwater mussels of the family Unionidae need to find suitable hosts to attach themselves and metamorphose into free-living juveniles. The specificity of the host-parasite relationship was investigated for the Iberian Unio tumidiformis Castro, 1885 by means of experimental infections and also by analyzing naturally infected fish. The process of encapsulation of glochi...
متن کاملArsenic Removal from Aqueous Solution Using Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles (Anatase)
Background and Objectives: Groundwater sources, as strategic sources of water supply, are of particular importance for human beings. Arsenic is a toxic and carcinogenic contaminant that has been reported to be widely found in groundwater sources. In recent years, adsorption property of nanoparticles has been used to remove arsenic. The present study was performed with the aim of assessing the a...
